About Welch
Welch is a Craig County town at the meeting of US 59, OK 2, and OK 10, eight miles south of Kansas and eighteen miles north of Vinita. The railroad reached the area in 1871, and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway added a switch in 1891 that gave hay and grain shippers a reason to gather around it. The town took shape in the Cherokee Nation around that shipping point and was named for Katy official A. L. Welch. Grain, cattle, and school buildings then filled in the map.
That agricultural map still shows up in Welch's civic routines. The Welch Livestock Auction grew out of the Maxson sales business, and crop production, ranching, and related farm work remain central to the surrounding area. Welch Public Schools operates from 707 South Curtis Street; its school sites include elementary, middle, and high grades. Town services include water billing and quality reports, board agendas, and monthly storm-siren tests. US 59 keeps Welch pointed north toward the Kansas line and south toward Vinita, while the school, sale barn, and water system keep the town grounded in Craig County.
