Weldon, NC

Weldon is a Halifax County town on the Roanoke River, just east of Roanoke Rapids and near the Northampton County line. The 2020 census counted 1,444 residents. U.S. 301 runs through town toward Rocky Mount and Emporia, while Weldon City Schools and Roanoke Valley Early College serve students from the surrounding area. The river, canal trail, historic district, and railroad corridor make Weldon's small footprint feel tied to a much larger transportation story.

Daniel Weldon purchased land here in 1752, and the settlement became Weldon's Landing. The canal completed in 1823 bypassed the Roanoke's rapids and opened river trade. Rail followed: the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad reached town in 1840, and several lines turned it into a regional hub. The old canal, aqueduct, railroad buildings, and downtown homes still sit alongside the river. Spring striped-bass fishing on the Roanoke adds a seasonal working tradition to a town built first around moving goods and people. The river remains the town's geographic center.
