Wellington, UT

Wellington sits in Castle Valley at the base of the Book Cliffs, just south of the Price River and about six miles southwest of Price on U.S. 6. Jefferson Tidwell and 13 Mormon pioneers settled the community in 1879, and the town incorporated in 1907 before becoming a city in 1948. That history remains part of the civic calendar through Pioneer Days, held around July 24. Wellington's position on the highway also gives it a practical relationship with Carbon County's county seat and the road toward Green River and eastern Utah.

Coal mining and farming remain the city's established work story, with Carbon County's railroad-and-mining past still visible across the Price River valley. The city keeps a small service center on U.S. 6, where gas stations and restaurants serve travelers heading toward Nine Mile Canyon, Moab, Goblin Valley, or Salt Lake. Nine Mile Canyon's rock art, the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers cabin, Knight-Ideal Fishing Pond, and the local city park supply distinct nearby reference points. Wellington is a highway town shaped by pioneer settlement, mining country, and the Price River.
