Wells, NY

Wells is a census-designated place inside the Town of Wells, in the southern Adirondacks. The 2020 census counted 531 residents in the CDP. Route 30 runs through the center, with Lake Algonquin spread along the Sacandaga River; the water is a dammed section of the river, not a separate scenic prop. The community reaches south toward the West Branch of the Sacandaga, so the local map keeps pulling you back to water, woods, and the highway between them. The Town of Wells itself was established in 1805 and is Hamilton County's oldest town.

The town's current rhythm is a mix of municipal housekeeping and Adirondack access. Wells has a town hall, library, historian, recreation program, fire company, transfer station, and a school district that serves students from Wells and neighboring Lake Pleasant, Piseco, Speculator, Hope, and Benson. Old Home Days and summer recreation give the town a community calendar, while Lake Algonquin, Augur Falls, and the Northville-Lake Placid Trail pull the outdoors right up against everyday life. Wells is the kind of place where a town meeting, a school event, and a river launch can all belong to the same local circuit.
