About Wellsville
Wellsville is a city in northwestern Montgomery County, Missouri, where the 2020 census counted 998 residents, down from 1,217 in 2010. Charles Wells owned the original townsite, and the community was platted in 1856; a post office followed in 1857. Missouri Route 19 runs through town, placing Wellsville eight miles northwest of Montgomery City, the county seat, and 22 miles southeast of Mexico. Those distances give the city a clear position within the county's road network.
Wellsville-Middletown R-I School District serves the municipality and connects local school life with the surrounding rural area. The city sits in the Cuivre River watershed, whose waters flow east toward the Mississippi. That pairing of a long-established town grid, a state highway, and a school district tied to the county shows how Wellsville functions today. These links still matter locally each day. It is a small Montgomery County city with its own civic routines and a practical relationship to the larger towns around it.
