About Wellsville

Wellsville is a population and business center for south-central Allegany County and neighboring towns. The village still serves as a practical hub for surrounding rural towns and wooded hills. The village's name honors landowner Gardiner Wells, and its earlier economy moved from lumber to leather tanning and then oil. The 2020 census counted 4,587 residents. Railroad rights-of-way, oil pumps in the hills, and former refinery buildings still mark those economic shifts today. Today, education and technical work occupy part of that industrial landscape.

Alfred State College's Wellsville campus uses former Sinclair Refinery buildings, and the college's Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing Center opened in 2016. The former Wellsville-Addison & Galeton railroad right-of-way is now a recreational trail extending south into Pennsylvania. New York Routes 417 and 19 meet in the village, which gives Wellsville a regional road connection alongside its college and business-center roles. Wellsville's local map puts oil-era buildings, applied education, rail remnants, and wooded hills in the same compact village.
