About Wellton

Wellton’s name came from a railroad water stop. When the Southern Pacific pushed east from Yuma in the late 1870s, crews drilled deep wells at a site first known as “Well Town.” The rails reached the area around 1879, a post office followed in 1904, and the settlement grew alongside the Gila River valley. Irrigation changed the scale of the story: canals opened the Wellton–Mohawk Valley to farming, tying the town to fields, water management, and the long work of keeping crops alive in the desert.

That history is still easy to trace. The Wellton–Mohawk Fine Arts and Historical Association museum keeps railroad, farming, mining, and daily-life exhibits, while Interstate 8 and the former U.S. Route 80 place the town on the old east–west corridor. Wellton Elementary and Antelope Union High School serve the local school area, and agriculture remains part of the working landscape, alongside the cattle operation outside town. With Yuma to the west and the Gila Mountains close by, Wellton feels tied to both a regional metro and its own desert valley.
