West Babylon, NY

West Babylon's civic map is a stack of Town, postal, school, library, and fire-service boundaries. The community is an unincorporated Town of Babylon hamlet and census-designated place stretching north from Great South Bay toward Sunrise Highway. West Babylon was the Town's most populous hamlet at the 2020 census, with 43,213 residents. The Town supplies municipal government and street maintenance, while other districts draw their own lines. Venetian Shores makes the overlap especially clear: the bayfront neighborhood lies within West Babylon and the Town of Babylon, yet its post office, schools, library district, and fire department use the Lindenhurst name. Address labels alone settle only part of the question when a household is comparing recreation access and local services.

The main corridors carry several earlier versions of the hamlet. Walt Whitman taught at West Babylon's first school during the winter of 1836, when his family lived on a nearby farm. The school stood near Montauk Highway and Great East Neck Road; the Great South Bay Shopping Center opened on the former farm site in 1957. At Belmont Junction, a Central Railroad of Long Island branch met the Long Island Rail Road beginning around 1874. Its freight depot and telegraph station lasted until 1888, and the Amityville–Babylon trolley stopped there from 1910 to 1920. Flower farms and nurseries also lined the area, including Bulk's Nursery and its 1930s windmill on Montauk Highway. Schools, transportation, horticulture, and retail successively used the same road-and-rail corridors.

Postwar housing and commerce established West Babylon as a separate community, and residents organized to make that identity legible. A postal substation opened under the name Babylon in 1950; a taxpayers' campaign restored West Babylon as the mailing name, and ZIP code 11704 followed in 1963. Residents created a library through another organizing effort. Friends of the Library formed in 1981, won a public vote, and opened the West Babylon Public Library in 1983 in a building partly occupied by a snack-food distributor. Its Route 109 building now supports book clubs, career and high-school-equivalency resources, a makerspace, a seed library, museum passes, and a Library of Things. In 2026, an all-ages summer reading club and a new children's STEM station added to that calendar.

Venetian Shores turns the boundary map into a practical summer rule. The 26-acre Town park occupies Great South Bay shoreline and includes a beach, boat ramp, playing fields, fishing access, and an interactive spray park. It takes its name from a residential development begun in 1926 and is one of two Town beaches on the bay. Summer entry is reserved for Town of Babylon residents with an annual recreation permit; the 2026 spray-park season runs from June 27 through September 7. A Lindenhurst mailing address can lead to a park inside the West Babylon census boundary, with seasonal admission determined by Town residency. At the entrance, several layers of local geography resolve to one permit.
