West Falls Church, VA

West Falls Church is a Fairfax County census-designated place governed by the county, distinct from the independent city of Falls Church. The boundary is especially important at Tinner Hill, where a freedmen’s community developed south of Falls Church after the Civil War. In 1887, a town boundary change placed most of that Black settlement in Fairfax County. Residents later met at 108 Tinner Hill Road to form the Colored Citizens Protective League in 1914 and oppose a residential-segregation ordinance. The organization became the nation’s first rural branch of the NAACP in 1918. That meeting address now falls within West Falls Church CDP, locating this national civil-rights story on the Fairfax County side of the modern boundary.

Thomas Jefferson Library stands on Arlington Boulevard, one of the area’s principal commercial roads. The branch began in 1954 behind a barber shop in Graham Road Shopping Center, moved into its present building in 1962, and now maintains Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese language collections. Its engraved Gateway to Freedom walkway, completed in 2015 with regional Vietnamese American organizations, commemorates the fortieth anniversary of Vietnamese refugee resettlement in the United States. Providence Rec Center on Marc Drive has pools, courts, exercise rooms, classes, and camps. Roundtree Park on Annandale Road adds outdoor courts, a playground, trails, and a reservable shelter.

Graham Road Community Building offers another gathering space and hosted the Providence District’s Earth Day program on April 18, 2026. The rail station bearing the West Falls Church name lies elsewhere: its Haycock Road address falls in Idylwood CDP, north of the independent city. Metro maps, postal addresses, county facilities, and census boundaries use “Falls Church” for overlapping geographies. The shared name masks a practical division. Tinner Hill, Thomas Jefferson Library, Providence Rec Center, and Roundtree Park are within West Falls Church CDP; the namesake Metrorail station is outside it.
