West Palm Beach, FL

West Palm Beach began as the mainland working city for Henry Flagler's resort development across the water in Palm Beach. Labor, supplies, shops, and services concentrated on the west side of Lake Worth, and the new municipality incorporated on November 5, 1894, two years before Miami. It became the Palm Beach County seat, a role still visible in the courthouse and government offices downtown. The 1920s brought rapid development of new neighborhoods before the 1928 hurricane devastated much of the city. Florida's first public junior college opened here in 1933, adding an educational institution during the Depression. These origins distinguish West Palm Beach from the resort island: it developed as the county's civic, commercial, and residential center with its own waterfront. Cultural institutions occupy different parts of that mainland city.

The Norton Museum of Art opened south of downtown in 1941 in a Marion Sims Wyeth-designed Art Deco building, becoming South Florida's first art museum; a 2019 expansion added galleries, an auditorium, and a sculpture garden. In the center, the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum occupies the second floor of the restored 1916 county courthouse. The Sunset Lounge stands just north of downtown in the Historic Northwest, a district rooted in the city's Black community. During the 1940s and 1950s, the venue hosted Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and other Black performers during segregation. A December 2025 city release announced completion of its restoration, and the venue had reopened for select Soul in the City concerts while final operating arrangements continued.

As of July 2026, the series was scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month. At the foot of Clematis Street, the West Palm Beach GreenMarket turns the waterfront into a recurring Saturday marketplace. The 2025-2026 season ran at Waterfront Commons with fresh produce, baked goods, coffee, local goods, live music, and workshops. The city scheduled the market's 32nd season to begin October 3, 2026. Its location connects several pieces of everyday downtown life: market stalls occupy the water end of the retail corridor, City Hall is a few blocks west, and the office and rail district lies farther inland. During its season, weekly market days also keep the city-facing shore tied to local commerce, distinct from the resort island across Lake Worth.

Downtown's main corridors serve different functions. Clematis Street runs west from the waterfront as the historic retail spine, while Quadrille Boulevard holds a denser office district. Brightline's station sits on Quadrille and provides intercity rail toward Miami and Orlando; the Tri-Rail station on Tamarind Avenue serves the regional commuter line and connects with local buses. County government, offices, restaurants, housing, and cultural institutions occupy adjoining parts of the center, with two rail stations inland and public space at the eastern waterfront. This arrangement keeps county business, downtown work, and two kinds of regional rail in one central district. Clematis restaurants and the Saturday market lead east toward the waterfront, with Palm Beach across Lake Worth.
