About West Plains

West Plains is a city and the county seat of Howell County, Missouri, situated in the Howell Valley region of the western Ozarks. Established in 1832 by pioneer Josiah Howell, the community of approximately 12,441 contains the historic Courthouse Square Historic District and a branch campus of Missouri State University. Local recreation is available at Gene Jones Park, and public schools are served by the West Plains R-7 School District.
