About West Pocomoke
West Pocomoke is a Somerset County census-designated place on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore. The 2020 census counted 481 residents. It lies near U.S. 13 and the Pocomoke River, around the junction of Wallace Taylor Road, Cokesbury Road, and Courthouse Hill Road. The Salisbury, Maryland–Delaware metropolitan area includes the community, but the immediate setting is much more local: county roads, low fields, river country, and the scattered homes of the southern Eastern Shore.
As a CDP, West Pocomoke has a different shape from a town with a municipal center or a traditional downtown. Its name and boundaries gather together a rural neighborhood within Somerset County, while nearby Pocomoke City and the larger Salisbury area handle many of the region’s broader services and connections. The Pocomoke River is the geographic thread running through the surrounding country, tying the Maryland side of the Eastern Shore to the river towns and marshes farther south. West Pocomoke is a small place, but its road junction and river setting give it a clear spot on the county map.
