West Point, IA

West Point sits on a hill in southeastern Lee County, about nine miles inland from the Mississippi River. The community was settled in 1834 and incorporated in 1858, with German heritage and surrounding prairie and farm land shaping the town's older identity. The name came from officers at Fort Des Moines, while the present map points toward Fort Madison, the Mississippi corridor, and the roads through Lee County. West Point is small in population, but its institutions gather a substantial amount of local history in one place.

The 6,195-square-foot library and historical museum opened in 2014 with library space, museum displays, a community meeting room, and a genealogy room. The Sweet Corn Festival, which began in 1952 with corn donated by local farmers, now runs across four days with Shuckfest, free sweet corn, park events, and a parade. Holy Trinity Catholic Grade School and Fort Madison Public schools serve the surrounding area. West Point's local rhythm is easy to recognize: farm country supplies the corn, volunteers run the festival, and the library keeps the community's records and meeting life under one roof.
