West Rancho Dominguez, CA

Industrial land is unusually prominent in West Rancho Dominguez, an unincorporated area west of Compton that has also been called West Compton and East Gardena. Los Angeles County's Metro Area Plan says industrial development occupies about 40% of its land and 60% of its built space, with neighborhood commerce concentrated along corridors such as Rosecrans Avenue and Avalon Boulevard. The census boundary more than doubled before 2020 when part of Willowbrook was transferred into it; 24,347 residents were counted that year. Residential blocks, commercial roads, and large employment tracts therefore share a place without a municipal downtown. A C Bilbrew Library provides a civic and cultural gathering point.

Its present building opened in 1974, was designed by African American architect Vincent Proby, and bears the name of musician, poet, and county official Madame A C Bilbrew. The branch houses the Black Resource Center, established in 1978, whose reference services, cultural programs, and heritage displays support research into African American history and culture. A Spanish-language collection, a 113-seat meeting room, study rooms, public computers, homework services, and a Teen Advisory Board extend the branch's everyday role. The library concentrates public programs and specialized collections within West Rancho Dominguez's otherwise dispersed residential and industrial landscape.
