West Seneca, NY

Charles E. Burchfield found a subject for "Rain and Wind Through the Tree" in the creekside land opposite his West Seneca home. Since 2000, that landscape has been the 29-acre Charles E. Burchfield Nature and Art Center, where a gallery and interpretive space share the grounds with an amphitheater, gardens, a play area, and trails beside Buffalo Creek. The paths pass remains of the Ebenezer Society's dam and hand-dug millraces as well as the Middle Ebenezer cemetery, putting several chapters of local history into a present-day park. The land was once within the Buffalo Creek Reservation; the town formed as Seneca in 1851, adopted West Seneca the following year, and lost its southern section when Lackawanna became a city in 1909. West Seneca had 45,500 residents in the 2020 count.

Recreation and civic activity are spread across 16 town parks rather than concentrated at Burchfield alone. Veterans Memorial Park on Union Road groups the public library, community center, Lions Club bandstand, enclosed seasonal ice rink, splash pad, pavilion, and town shelter beside municipal offices. Other facilities include lighted sports fields, soccer grounds, walking paths, and neighborhood play spaces. In summer 2026, the Town Center's Thursday farmers market ran for 16 weeks with more than 50 local vendors selling produce, baked goods, prepared meals, flowers, and crafts. The market occupied the grassy hill at Union Road and Main Street, and its themes included two children's days, a Buffalo sports day, and an animal-rescue finale. Picnic tables, acoustic music, and children's recreation activities made the market more than a weekly shopping stop.
