West Springfield has no incorporated town government or single downtown; its census boundary instead groups Fairfax County neighborhoods between rail lines, creeks, and Fort Belvoir. The Norfolk Southern Railway forms the northern edge, Accotink Creek the east, Fairfax County Parkway and Fort Belvoir the south, and Pohick Creek and a power-line corridor the west. The 2020 census counted 23,369 residents. County facilities rather than a city hall provide much of the area's shared civic framework.
