West Winfield, NY

West Winfield is a village in the Town of Winfield, south of Utica in Herkimer County. U.S. Route 20 and New York Route 51 meet here, while a northern branch of the Unadilla River runs through the village on its way toward the Susquehanna system. The village’s name points indirectly to General Winfield Scott. Its nineteenth-century growth included the West Winfield Academy, established in 1850, and a large tannery later operated by Hiteman Leather.

The village still carries a practical set of town services: a hardware store, auto-parts store, bank, post office, gas station, eateries, churches, fire and ambulance service, and a New York State Police substation. Mt. Markham Central School is a major local employer, with the middle school in the village. Town Memorial Park sits between North Winfield Creek and the Unadilla branch, with ball fields, picnic pavilions, and a playground and nature trail taking shape. West Winfield feels like a small service center arranged around roads, water, school, and the routines of the surrounding valley.
