Westfield, IN

Westfield's earliest civic story survives in an anti-slavery cemetery near the town's original commercial corner. Quaker settler Asa Bales opened a store at Union Street and what is now State Road 32, helped plat Westfield on May 6, 1834, and donated land for an Anti-Slavery Friends meetinghouse and burial ground. In the 1844 Rhodes Incident, slave catchers seized a formerly enslaved family living nearby. Westfield residents intervened during the removal, then organized a legal defense for those charged. A jury acquitted the defendants in 1845 after finding that the family had become free upon an earlier move to Illinois. Westfield became an important Underground Railroad station where several Indiana routes converged.

The city around that historic corner has changed scale quickly. Westfield became a town in 1848 and a city in 2008. The city's 2024 estimate of 62,994 residents was roughly twice its 2010 census count. Growth has produced several distinct settings across the municipality. Downtown retains the old street crossing and the Asa Bales Park and cemetery area. Grand Park forms a specialized sports district to the north, newer subdivisions extend across former farmland, and much of the land west of Little Eagle Creek remains agricultural. Downtown blocks, subdivisions near the sports campus, and roads beside working fields occupy distinct parts of the same city.

Opened in 2014, city-owned Grand Park spans over 400 acres and has 31 multipurpose fields, 26 baseball and softball diamonds, and a 377,000-square-foot events center. Its tournament calendar brings soccer, field sports, baseball, softball, and indoor competitions to a campus built to operate many venues at once. The Pacers Athletic Center also operates on the campus. The Indianapolis Colts opened their eighth and final Westfield training camp there on July 29, 2026; camp moves to Indianapolis in 2027. Professional training, youth and amateur tournaments, and indoor winter sports bring different calendars to the same site, making event operations and visiting teams recurring parts of city life. Grand Park also stands apart physically from the older downtown: it is a broad campus reached along major roads, while the original town developed around Union Street and State Road 32.

Grand Junction Plaza has given downtown a different kind of gathering place beside Grassy Branch Creek. The Midland Trace Trail runs 4.96 miles through Westfield, linking the plaza with Quaker Park and connections toward the Monon Trail. City-led creek stomps use the shallow water for summer ecology programs, and the 2026 Westfield Farmers Market occupies the plaza on Thursdays from May through early September. A new Westfield Washington Public Library opened nearby on June 1, 2024. The institution's local roots reach to a 100-volume collection begun in 1856. Its new 43,000-square-foot home includes a community room, teen space, outdoor areas, and a coffee shop, extending downtown activity beyond scheduled plaza events. On a summer market day, produce stands fill the plaza as the trail and Grassy Branch Creek pass through the same part of town.
