Westfield, MA

Westfield's "Whip City" nickname remains tied to a working trade. Four whip-manufacturing properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Westfield Whip at 360 Elm Street still makes whips. The industry followed a much longer agricultural period: European trading houses appeared in 1639-40, Westfield was founded in 1669, and its alluvial land supported farming for roughly 150 years before bricks, whips, cigars, paper goods, and machinery became important products. The Westfield River emerges from the Berkshire Hills and crosses the city toward the Connecticut River, dividing the North and South sides; the Little River also passes downtown. This western Massachusetts city had 40,834 residents in 2020. Westfield State University adds another long-running institution. Horace Mann founded it as a public coeducational teacher-training school in 1839, and it moved to Westfield in 1844. Current community activity links the downtown riverfront with the university side of the city.

Westfield's 2026 open-space plan describes the Columbia Greenway as a grade-separated walking and bicycling corridor running north from the Southwick line through the city center to the Westfield River. There it meets the 1.7-mile Westfield River Walk, which passes parks and provides views of the Great River Bridges. Across Western Avenue from the university, the nonprofit Stanley Park opens its gardens, trails, sports areas, and seasonal educational, cultural, and music programs without an entrance fee. Downtown, the Westfield Athenaeum combines library services with unusually substantial local-history and art resources: its Jasper Rand Art Museum rotates exhibitions, the Edwin Smith Historical Museum displays Westfield artifacts, and its archives cover local history and genealogy. The Athenaeum also schedules book clubs and classes and maintains a makerspace, seed library, museum passes, and homebound delivery, giving the historic Elm Street institution roles well beyond circulating books.
