Westfield, PA

Westfield is a Tioga County borough of 1,113 residents in the 2020 census, set along the Cowanesque River in the valley that first drew Reuben Cook and later Quaker settlers. The first settlement was called Priestville before the name Westfield took hold. The borough incorporated in February 1867; its post office dates to the 1820s, and the local firehouse arrived in 1881. Waterworks followed in 1893, gas lines in 1898, and electric service in 1925. The Cowanesque remains close to borough streets.

For more than a century, tanning supplied Westfield's largest industrial story. The Eberle Tanning Company, later Westfield Tanning Company, operated from 1867 until 2005 and once produced sole leather for shoes at a global scale. Its Church Street buildings were demolished in 2021. Electri-Cord Manufacturing now provides the borough's largest employment base, while Crary Hose Company, borough offices, and Northern Tioga schools keep daily services close to the center. Westfield carries an old river-valley industry into a new working chapter.
