About Westlake

Westlake Porter Public Library makes advanced technology part of a public library visit. Its reservable makerspace includes 3D printers, a laser cutter and engraver, CNC router, large-format printer, sewing and embroidery machines, design workstations, and a recording booth. In August 2026, the library is adding a Space Exploration Lab that allows patrons to control a telescope in Spain remotely and capture images of galaxies, nebulae, and other deep-space objects. Four mission-control screens display telescope status, moon phases, upcoming objects, and saved images. These facilities serve a city that developed from the remaining portion of Dover Township, incorporated as Dover Village in 1911, and became a city in 1957. A total of 34,228 residents were recorded in the 2020 census. Public recreation occupies an 86-acre campus around the Westlake Recreation Center. A year-round 1.2-mile walking and running track circles outdoor facilities that include tennis courts, ballfields, a playground, and a five-acre fishing lake.

In May 2026, the city opened new athletic fields and an expanded playground there with accessible paths, shaded seating, and separate play areas. Crocker Park supplies a different type of shared space through a mixed-use district of shops, offices, housing, and events. Its North Union Farmers Market runs outdoors every Saturday from April into December in 2026, then continues at an indoor winter location; the market accepts and matches SNAP benefits. Community theater has an unusually long local history. Clague Playhouse is preparing its 99th season for 2026-27, with an August open house that includes backstage tours and previews of both Red Barn Youth Theater and the Clague & Co. Traveling Players.
