About Westland

Westland lies in Wayne County about 18 miles west of downtown Detroit. Westland’s 2022 population was 84,037. Long before suburban development, the area contained a Potawatomi village in the 18th century and was used as hunting territory by other Algonquian peoples. Settlers began arriving around 1824. Perrinsville School on Warren Road preserves part of that early local history. Westland and neighboring Wayne jointly form the Wayne-Westland Community School District.
