About Weston Mills
Weston Mills is a Cattaraugus County hamlet spread between Portville and Olean, on the north side of the Allegheny River. The name came from three Weston brothers, who set up a mill there in 1851; water wheels, then steam, powered the mills as a small settlement grew around them. William Wallace Weston became postmaster when the local office opened in 1873. Today New York Route 417 puts Olean two miles west and Portville three miles southeast, while the old lumber story still sits in the name.
