About Westport
Westport is a Decatur County town laid out in 1836 by Simeon Sharp and Hockersmith Merryman, with the original twenty lots centered on Main and Poplar Streets. It started as a few cabins and a store, grew into a local trading point, then got a second wind when the railroad arrived in 1880. Two major fires reshaped the business blocks, but the older street pattern remains easy to read. Westport is southeastern Indiana with a small-town grid, a covered bridge nearby, and a history that keeps rebuilding itself.
