Wetumka, OK

Wetumka is a quiet Hughes County town of about 1,100 residents, located along U.S. Highway 75 roughly fifteen miles northeast of Holdenville. Muscogee Creek settlers founded the community and named it after their ancestral home in Alabama, using a Creek word meaning “tumbling water.” Early growth followed the railroad at the turn of the twentieth century along with a 1920s oil boom, shaping the steady, rural community you see today.

The town serves as the headquarters for both the Alabama-Quassarte Tribal Town and the Kialegee Tribal Town, giving it strong cultural roots alongside local schools and landmarks like the historic stone armory. Wetumka is also well known for its sense of humor, on full display during Sucker Day each September. The festival started in the 1950s after a traveling con artist duped the town into buying supplies for a circus that never showed up. Locals decided to throw a party anyway, creating a lighthearted annual tradition full of parades, crafts, and friendly gatherings.
