About Wheaton

Wheaton sits along the Mustinka River in west-central Minnesota, where U.S. 75 and Minnesota 27 meet the county-seat duties of Traverse County. A post office has stood here since 1884, and the town was designated county seat in 1886. The courthouse's story is unusually dramatic: when Wheaton's bid for the seat fell short in an 1889 vote, county records still moved from Browns Valley after a legal fight and a snowbound arrival of 85 Wheaton men with 25 sleighs. The current two-story brick courthouse dates to 1892.

That history still gives Wheaton a civic role beyond its size. County offices and court functions sit near the older river-and-rail town, while the Mustinka connects Wheaton to the larger watershed and glacial lake plain. U.S. 75 carries north-south traffic and Highway 27 crosses east-west, keeping the city in the path of county errands and regional travel. Wheaton's character comes from a courthouse won through stubborn local politics, a river that passes through town, and the highways that keep the county seat connected.
