White Castle is an Iberville Parish town on the south bank of the Mississippi River, part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area but shaped locally by River Road, sugar cane, and the river itself. The town formed in the early 1900s as logging brought people and business; when the cypress was depleted, sugar cane—already established in the area during the 1800s—became the main economic base. Chemical industry along the Mississippi between Baton Rouge and New Orleans added another layer in the 1950s and drove growth into the 1980s.
