White Oak, MD

White Oak is best known across the region as the headquarters of the Food and Drug Administration. The sprawling federal research campus sits on land once used for naval weapons testing, bringing thousands of scientists, regulators, and support staff into the neighborhood each workday. Home to around 16,000 residents, this unincorporated corner of eastern Montgomery County provides an established suburban setting with direct access to major healthcare and federal employers.

Daily conveniences and essential services cluster primarily along the Route 29 corridor. Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center serves as the primary hospital for the area, while Montgomery College operates an East County center nearby for college coursework and career training. Everyday shopping is anchored by spots like White Oak Town Center, which brings grocery options, casual dining, and neighborhood retail to local residents. Further down the road, long-term master plans for Viva White Oak aim to add more life-science offices, shops, and housing in the years ahead.

Getting around is straightforward thanks to Montgomery County's Flash bus rapid transit line, which runs along Route 29 every 15 minutes. The route links neighborhood stops to the FDA campus and downtown Silver Spring, where riders can transfer to the Metro Red Line or the MARC commuter train. Unlike many neighboring suburbs dominated by single-family subdivisions, White Oak has a large renter population spread across garden apartments, townhomes, and condo complexes.
