White Shield, ND

White Shield is a small, close-knit community of around 360 residents on the Fort Berthold Reservation in western North Dakota's McLean County. Built in the 1950s after the creation of Lake Sakakawea flooded the historic town of Elbowoods, the town serves as an important cultural home for the Arikara people within the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation. Daily life connects closely to the White Shield School and the Arikara Cultural Center, which actively support community gatherings and tribal language revitalization. Situated six miles north of Lake Sakakawea, 20 miles west of Garrison, and 25 miles southeast of Parshall, White Shield offers a quiet, rural setting with convenient access to the water and neighboring towns.
