Whitewater, CA

At the mouth of the Whitewater River canyon, Whitewater CDP is the Riverside County stop between North Palm Springs and Cabazon. Interstate 10 runs beside the community, with the San Gorgonio Pass wind farm spread across the surrounding slopes. The river begins high on 11,499-foot Mount San Gorgonio, then comes down through the San Bernardino Mountains toward the Coachella Valley. That meeting of pass, desert, and mountain water helps show why Whitewater feels bigger on a map than its population suggests.

Whitewater also has an older travel story. In the 1860s it served as a rest and watering place on the Bradshaw Trail between San Bernardino and La Paz, and the canyon remains a natural route through the pass. The BLM-designated river reach continues for 28 miles from the headwaters, with steep canyon walls, springs, and a corridor connecting the San Bernardino and San Jacinto ranges. It is also a Cahuilla cultural area, a detail that belongs in the place's history alongside the later highway and turbines. Today the most distinctive local landmark is Whitewater Preserve, a 2,246-acre river property at 9160 Whitewater Canyon Road. The preserve includes hiking, birdwatching, camping, and a visitor center, while the old trout-farm footprint has been replanted with sycamores, cottonwoods, willows, and wetland plants. Whitewater is still a small CDP, but the combination of canyon access, wind energy, desert highway, and restored river habitat gives it a clear character of its own.
