Whitewater, KS

Whitewater is a Butler County city in the northwest corner of Kansas, about 20 miles northwest of Wichita, with 661 residents in the 2020 census. The West Branch of the Whitewater River runs along town, while K-196 links the community with the roads and school network around Butler and Sedgwick counties. Remington USD 206 has its district office and Remington Middle School in Whitewater, and Remington High School sits on the rural road north of town. Whitewater incorporated in 1890, and the present town grew around the intersection of the Missouri Pacific and Rock Island railroads. The old railroad era is still part of the local story: a Whitewater Railway Station appears in the city’s historical collection, and a piece of the town was moved to Wichita’s Old Cowtown Museum. Three museums now hold the civic memory on Main Street—the Whitewater Photo Museum, the 1911 City Jail, and the Museum of Walk-Behind Tractors. The district’s Frederic Remington name connects school life with the artist’s Kansas years.
