About Why

Why is an unincorporated rural community in Pima County, Arizona, lying near the western boundary of the Tohono O'odham Nation and immediately north of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Approximately thirty miles north of the Mexican border at Lukeville and ten miles south of Ajo, the community takes its name from the Y-shaped intersection of State Routes 85 and 86 that once existed there. With a population of 122 at the 2020 census, students are served by either the Indian Oasis-Baboquivari Unified School District or the Ajo Unified School District.
