Wickenburg, AZ

Wickenburg sits about an hour northwest of Phoenix, where the Sonoran Desert opens up and the pace of life slows down. The town grew out of Henry Wickenburg’s 1860s gold strike at the Vulture Mine, and that frontier background is still visible everywhere. Historic Frontier Street runs right along the railroad tracks, the 1895 train depot now welcomes newcomers as the visitor center, and an old mesquite tree that once served as the town jail still stands downtown. Even the Hassayampa River comes with local character. Because the river flows underground for much of the year, locals put up tongue-in-cheek "No Fishing From Bridge" signs over the dry sand, showing off the community's easygoing sense of humor.

Wickenburg is widely known as the team roping capital of the world, so seeing horses and trailers parked outside local diners is a regular sight.
