Wild Rose, WI

Wild Rose is a Waushara County village whose name comes either from wild rose bushes near the first town site or from early settlers from Rose, New York. A post office has operated here since 1873, when H. H. Jones opened a store on the John Davis farm and helped establish the village. The mill pond, formed by damming a feeder creek of the Pine River, powered a grist mill and generated the village's first electric power. That combination of post office, store, mill, and pond still gives the place a legible Wisconsin town story.

Today, the Pioneer Museum on Main Street keeps that story in physical form. Its eight-building complex includes the 1884 Elisha Stewart House, a smokehouse, carriage house, blacksmith shop, original bank, Pioneer Hall, and a country schoolhouse. Nearly three dozen late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century buildings remain in the village's architecture inventory, and the museum's exhibits draw on the Welsh, Norwegian, and English families who settled the area. Wild Rose counted 780 residents in 2020; the museum, mill pond, and Main Street together make the village's past part of its current map.
