Williamsport, MD

Williamsport is an incorporated Washington County town on the Potomac River, where a ferry was operating by 1744. The 2020 census counted 2,083 residents. That crossing made the site useful long before modern roads: British troops camped here in 1755, and later the C&O Canal brought canal boats, warehouses, and towpath traffic through town. The Potomac still marks the southern edge, with West Virginia just across the water. The canal era is still the local hook. Cushwa Basin, the Cushwa Warehouse, Lock 44, and the Conococheague Aqueduct give Williamsport a working piece of canal country, not just a plaque on a wall.

The towpath now makes the canal feel like part of the town's front porch. The town sits close enough to Hagerstown and Martinsburg for bigger errands, but the river, canal, and old ferry crossing give it a story of its own.
