Wilmore is a quiet, close-knit borough along the Little Conemaugh River in Cambria County, about eight miles south of Ebensburg. The community has a distinctive founding story: it was established by Godfrey Wilmore, a formerly enslaved man from Maryland who settled in the valley and built an early sawmill on the river. While the town was originally laid out as Jefferson in the 1830s, locals continued calling the area after Wilmore's post office and train stop, leading to the name being adopted officially when the borough incorporated in 1859.
