About Wilson

Thirty restored wind-powered sculptures make Wilson’s downtown gathering place move even when no event is scheduled. Vollis Simpson, a retired farm-machinery repairman, built the towering works from road signs, bicycle parts, and scrap metal; the two-acre park that preserves them opened in 2017. It now doubles as an event ground. In 2026, the Wilson Farmers & Artisan Market operated there on Saturday mornings from April through August, with selected fall evening dates, and the free Gig in the Park concert series ran from April through June. A few blocks away, a new downtown ballpark opened on March 28, 2026, and became home field for the Wilson Warbirds that season. Together, the sculptures, market pavilion, concerts, and baseball create several reasons to use the center of town outside conventional business hours.

Wilson also runs infrastructure that directly shapes household routines. Greenlight, the city’s community-owned fiber network, began connecting homes in 2008 and had more than 10,000 customers by 2024; the city also provides electric, gas, water, and wastewater service. Free public Wi-Fi is available downtown, including around the ballpark and Whirligig Park. Recreation extends well beyond that district. City programs cover youth and adult sports, fitness, camps, open gyms, older-adult activities, and adaptive offerings, while municipal pools operate seasonally. At the 2,300-acre Buckhorn Reservoir, boating, fishing, picnic areas, birding, horseback riding, and trails occupy land that also protects Wilson’s drinking-water supply. Wilson grew from 47,851 people in 2020 to an estimated 49,572 in 2025. Those measures place the visible downtown investment within a city where household circumstances vary substantially.
