Winchester, OH

Winchester is an Adams County village in southern Ohio, laid out along State Route 136 where it meets the Appalachian Highway, State Route 32. The 2020 census counted 987 residents. The highway connection puts Cincinnati within the regional map, while Winchester Township roads lead into the surrounding farms and creek valleys. The village has the compact scale of an early county settlement, with its historic houses and public buildings gathered near the original streets.

Joseph Darlinton laid out Winchester in 1815 and named it for his Virginia birthplace. The village incorporated in the 1860s, then became the eastern terminus of the Cincinnati and Eastern Railway for a short period in the late 1870s. The first store opened in 1819, and Dr. A.C. Lewis’s house, built between 1845 and 1848, remains a local historic site. Winchester’s Ohio marker remembers the founding, the railroad, and Evellyn Longman Batchelder, an early woman sculptor. Today the old village sits beside a four-lane route that carries the larger traffic past it.
