About Windthorst

Windthorst is a quiet, close-knit rural community tucked into North Texas dairy country, about 25 miles south of Wichita Falls along Highway 281. Founded by German Catholic settlers in the late 19th century, the town still revolves around its heritage, local school pride, and the red-brick spires of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. With only a few hundred residents, it offers a peaceful small-town rhythm where neighbors know one another and high school sports bring out the whole town.

One of the community's most beloved landmarks is St. Mary’s Grotto, a stone outdoor shrine with a remarkable backstory. During World War II, 64 local men deployed overseas and sent money home from their military pay to fund a memorial shrine. Every single one of those servicemen returned home safely, joining together to dedicate the completed grotto in 1950. Today, Windthorst remains a grounded, tight-knit place for newcomers looking for wide-open countryside within an easy drive of Wichita Falls.
