Windthorst, TX

Windthorst is a town in Archer and Clay counties, with 342 residents in the 2020 census, within the Wichita Falls metropolitan area. U.S. 281 runs through the center, 25 miles north to Wichita Falls and 33 miles southeast to Jacksboro. The town is named for Ludwig Windthorst, a German Catholic statesman, and that Catholic history remains visible at St. Mary’s Church and the town’s school. Windthorst Independent School District operates Windthorst High School, a Class A school whose campus is part of the town’s shared civic and religious landscape.

St. Mary’s Grotto carries the most personal story. The shrine project began in 1942, after the United States entered World War II, and the 64 Windthorst servicemen sent pay home to fund the $4,000 project. The grotto was dedicated in 1950, with the servicemen present. That story keeps wartime service, parish life, and local memory in one place. Windthorst is a Texas town organized along a north-south highway, with a German Catholic name, a school district, and a Marian shrine built through the contributions of men serving overseas.
