Wingdale, NY

Wingdale is a Dutchess County hamlet and census-designated place inside the town of Dover, with the Swamp River running through the center. The 2020 census counted 1,051 residents. The hamlet sits in southeastern Dutchess County between Dover Plains and Pawling, while New York 22 and Route 55 carry the through traffic toward the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. The Metro-North Harlem Valley–Wingdale station gives the scattered community a rail connection that feels bigger than its population. Wingdale has a wonderfully odd local backstory. General George Washington and Lafayette were associated with the Morehouse Tavern, an old inn in South Dover that is now considered part of Wingdale, while the former Harlem Valley State Hospital grounds occupy the southern side of the CDP.

From 1961 to 1976, the Dover Drag Strip brought quarter-mile racing and weekend noise to the same broad valley. Today, the Swamp River, old roads, golf course, and train station shape the map.
