Winter Haven sits at the headwaters of the Peace River in the Central Florida Highlands, where flat terrain alternates with gently rolling hills. Its southern chain of lakes includes Lake Eloise, Lake Howard, and Lake Lulu, and the city’s average elevation is 146 feet. Winter Haven lies about 51 miles east of Tampa and 47 miles southwest of Orlando. The Polk County city had 49,219 residents in 2020 and is a principal city of the Lakeland–Winter Haven metropolitan area. Timucua and Calusa people were the earliest known inhabitants of the area.
