Wintergreen, VA

Wintergreen is a small census-designated place spread across Augusta and Nelson counties in southern Rockfish Valley, near Route 151 and the South Fork Rockfish River. The 2020 census counted 346 residents. The name is easy to confuse with Wintergreen Resort, a separate community nine miles away. The CDP is the older valley-side place, with its roads, farms, river crossings, and hamlet-scale history distinct from the resort's mountain development.

River Bluff supplies the clearest window into that earlier landscape. Its brick farmhouse began as a one-room house in 1785 for Nathaniel Clarke, gained wings around 1810, and is known for its rare diaper-pattern chimney. The property is listed on the National Register and contributes to the South Rockfish Valley Rural Historic District. Today the practical orientation is Route 151, Nellysford, and the South Fork valley, with the Blue Ridge rising nearby and the resort part of the wider regional map. Wintergreen is a place-name shared by two nearby communities, and knowing the difference makes the local geography click.
