Winterport, ME

At the 2020 census, Winterport was a Waldo County town of 3,817 people on the west bank of the Penobscot River, about a dozen miles south of Bangor. The area was first settled in 1766 as part of Frankfort and became its own town on March 12, 1860. The name came from the harbor: this stretch of the Penobscot estuary generally stayed open in winter, so Winterport became a place where trade and shipping could keep moving when other river ports were locked up. Bucksport sits across the water, and the river still gives the town its orientation.

Winterport's older center grew around that river business. The Winterport Historic District follows Main Street and surrounding roads, with Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate buildings left from the nineteenth-century boom. The old Commercial House began as a way station for travelers, ferries, coaches, and goods moving toward Bangor; after a 1965 fire, the building was restored and put back to work. Routes 1A, 69, and 139 now carry the road traffic, while the Marsh River and Penobscot keep the water geography visible. Winterport is a town whose name still tells you what the harbor used to do.
