About Winthrop

Winthrop sits where the Methow and Chewuch rivers meet, with the North Cascades Highway carrying the valley's main through-route past a downtown built in an Old West style. The town grew after 1890 in the homeland of the Methow people, and the earlier Chiliwist Trail and stage roads set the transportation pattern before Highway 20 brought more travelers through the valley. Local mining, logging, and agriculture later gave way to tourism and outdoor recreation. The Shafer Historical Museum, housed in the former Waring Castle, keeps that older valley story in view with pioneer, farm, and mining collections. The Methow Valley School District lists Liberty Bell and Methow Valley Elementary in Winthrop, while the annual Balloon Roundup brings a recurring winter event to the town's calendar.
