Wister, OK

Wister sits in central Le Flore County near Lake Wister and the northern Ouachita National Forest, 55 miles east of McAlester and about 20 miles west of the Oklahoma-Arkansas border. The town grew from railroad construction and received a post office in 1890; it was named for Gutman G. Wister, an official of the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad. Two railroads crossed here, linking a town whose early businesses included a bank, cotton gin, gristmill, sawmill, hotel, and retail stores. Lake Wister was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1946 to 1949 for flood control and conservation.

U.S. Highways 270 and 271 pass through Wister, while Lake Wister lies just south and provides a regional recreation and water-management reference. Wister Public Schools operates elementary and high school programs from its Logan Street campus; the state’s 2024–25 district profile lists 480 students. The school, highway, lake, and rail history give Wister a clear local map, joining a Le Flore County town with the reservoir and forest country around it.
