Witmer, PA

Witmer occupies a small part of East Lampeter Township in central Lancaster County, where the Conestoga River drains the broad valley toward the Susquehanna. The name carries a piece of transportation history. In 1787, Pennsylvania authorized Abram Witmer to build a toll bridge across the Conestoga on the road between Lancaster and Philadelphia; Witmer Bridge served the public for 125 years. That crossing helped turn a river valley into a connected rural community.
