Wittmann, AZ

Wittmann sits along U.S. 60 northwest of Phoenix, outside the urban core but inside the metro's western edge. It began as Nadaburg, a railroad switch and homesteading settlement, and took the Wittmann name in 1929 after residents honored Joseph and Eleanor Wittmann for their efforts to build a dam and bring irrigation to nearby fields. The Hassayampa River and the old water projects remain part of the community's backstory, while agriculture shaped the working landscape for much of the twentieth century.

Now the same transportation corridor is at the center of a major land-use question. Maricopa County records describe BNSF's proposed Logistics Park Phoenix and an intermodal facility near Wittmann; in March 2026, a county supervisor said construction had begun on a 350-acre facility within a larger 4,320-acre property, after the Board of Supervisors denied a related comprehensive-plan amendment in November 2025. The project would put freight, warehouses, and distribution next to the U.S. 60 community, so Wittmann's local scoop is a 1916-era railroad settlement meeting a 2026 logistics question.
