Wolfe City, TX

Wolfe City is a Hunt County city at the meeting of State Highways 34 and 11, about 17 miles north of Greenville. The place began in the late 1860s or early 1870s when Lemuel Pinckney Wolfe built a mill near Oyster Creek. For a time it was Wolfe's Mill; a post office arrived in 1882, incorporation followed in 1887, and the Santa Fe Railroad turned the town into a shipping point for area farms. That rail-era growth produced banks, mills, a foundry, cotton gins, and a newspaper in the early twentieth century.

Today SH 34 runs through the center as Santa Fe Street, linking Wolfe City with Honey Grove to the northeast and Greenville to the south. Wolfe City ISD keeps a school-centered civic structure in town, with athletics, band, agriculture programs, and an after-school program among its offerings. The old railroad story still helps account for the street name and the town's position near Hunt County's northern edge, while Oyster Creek and the two state highways set the local geography. Wolfe City is a small county city whose history is easy to see in its name, road network, and school district.
