Woodlawn CDP (Carroll County), VA

Woodlawn is a Carroll County census-designated place in Virginia's Blue Ridge, with U.S. 58 running between Galax and Hillsville through the community. The area began as a 1756 land grant to James Wood, and later settlement followed the Treaty of Lochaber-era opening of the land to newcomers. A Carroll County comprehensive plan identifies the U.S. 58 corridor, especially Woodlawn, as a place where growth has concentrated. The route gives Woodlawn its regional orientation, connecting a spread-out mountain community to two nearby towns.

Woodlawn School is the local landmark that carries the most history. The campus held Carroll County's first public high school, completed in 1908, then added a home economics cottage and an agricultural building for vocational instruction. It served as a major county school until closing in 2013, and Virginia's state historic office now lists it on the state and national registers. The school grounds, the U.S. 58 corridor, and the surrounding Blue Ridge landscape make Woodlawn legible as a rural education center turned highway community.
