About Woodlawn Park
Woodlawn Park is a Jefferson County city built over the former Woodlawn Race Course, which opened in 1859 and drew crowds to Louisville’s edge. The track closed after the Civil War, but its name stayed attached to the land—and to the Woodlawn Vase, a Tiffany trophy whose replica is awarded at the Preakness. A railroad stop once carried racegoers to the course; in the 1950s the acreage turned into a residential city. Woodlawn Park incorporated in 1954 and became a fifth-class city in 1966. Its local marker is a reminder that today’s streets sit on an old racing ground.
